Dedication Ceremony for Priscilla T. Leong Children's Reading Room at Kapaa Library on May 17

The Kapaa Public Library (Kauai) will conduct a dedication ceremony to rename the Children’s Room the “Priscilla T. Leong Children’s Reading Room” in honor of the late Priscilla T. Leong, on Friday, May 17 at 11 a.m.

Leong, who was a strong advocate in the opening of Kapaa Public Library in March 1955 and worked as a special part-time children’s assistant, passed away in 2012.  Leong, a Kauai native and regular Library patron and avid reader, served for many years as the librarian at Kapaa Elementary School.  She helped to establish the Friends of the Kapaa Public Library, where she served as President until 2011, and as Chairperson of the former Kauai District Library Advisory Commission.

The family of the late Priscilla T. Leong recently donated $25,000 to the Library in honor of Leong’s dedication and commitment to libraries and children.  The donation will be used for the funding of library materials, programs, and furniture.

Kauai looks at updating older island bridges

LIHUE, Hawaii (AP) - The single-lane Opaekaa Bridge on the island of Kauai is due for a facelift.

According to the Garden Island, the project has officials trying to figure out how much of the bridge's history should be preserved while structural changes are made to enhance safety.

Andy Bushnell is a Kapaa Homestead resident and retired history professor at Kauai Community College. He says Kauai's one-lane bridges are part of the area's rural lifestyle and should remain that way. But others argue that the one-lane bridges should be replaced with two-lane bridges for safety.

Ken Teshima with the county Public Works Department says many of Kauai's bridges, because of their age, need to be considered to be listed as historical.

VIDEO: GoPro found in Hanalei Bay shows 'wipeout'

HANALEI, KAUAI (HawaiiNewsNow)- The video on a GoPro camera found in Hanalei Bay on Kauai tells quite a story.  A wave builds on the horizon suddenly you hear a man saying,"Oh oooh, were going to get slammed."

Moments later the wave hits and you see the camera sinking to the ocean floor.

The GoPro was presumably lost forever, until April 9 when a San Francisco couple went surfing in Hanalei Bay. Anna Kuperberg and her wife, Carla Johnson found the camera in the water and were surprised to find that it still worked.

Grant awarded to clean up tsunami debris

LIHUE, Hawaii (AP) - A Kauai organization has been awarded a grant to help clean up debris from the Japanese tsunami.

According to The Garden Island, the state Department of Health says the Surfrider Foundation of Kauai received a $25,000 grant to help clean up Kauai's shorelines. Carl Berg, chairman of the foundation, says the money will be used to fund a pair of fellowships for students at Kauai Community College. 1 of the students will coordinate beach cleanups and net patrols. The other will monitor tsunami debris.

Berg says starting in February there has been a large spike in the amount of tsunami-related debris.
