Senior Craft and Food Fair set for Oct. 15

LIHU'E – The members of all nine senior centers on Kaua'i will be participating in the annual Senior Craft and Food Fair scheduled on Saturday, Oct. 15.

The event will be held at the Kaua'i War Memorial Convention Hall from 9 am to 1 pm.

There is no charge for admission.

A wide variety of food and hand-crafted items made by seniors will be available for sale including: blankets; cards; handbags; ornaments; pillows; and rugs. Great entertainment is also planned.

In addition, fair-goers will have a chance to win door prizes, with one ticket given to each person at the door.

The fair is sponsored by the Department of Parks and Recreation and the Na Kupuna Council.

KPD is asking for help with finding runaway

LIHU‘E – The Kaua‘i Police Department is asking for the public’s help with finding a runaway.

Mahina Rivera-Denning was last seen leaving her residence in Kapa‘a on Sunday, Sept. 18.  She has not made contact with her family since and is believed to be on the west side of Kaua'i.

Rivera-Denning, age 13, is five feet two inches tall and weighs roughly 110 pounds. She has brown hair, brown eyes, a thin build and tan complexion.

Rivera-Denning is of Hawaiian descent.

Anyone with information about Rivera-Denning is urged to call KPD Dispatch at 241-1711, the Investigative Services Bureau, 241-1696, or Crime Stoppers, 241-1887.

Injured visitor rescued from Hanakapiai Falls

HANAKAPIAI – A 28-year-old female visitor from Montreal, Canada was airlifted from near Hanakapiai Falls after injuring her ankle Saturday afternoon.

The female had reported a broken ankle while at the Hanakapiai Falls at about 5:04 p.m.

Rescue 3 and Air 1 responded to the call.

Rescuers aboard Air 1 located the female about 200 yards below the falls and airlifted her to the Princeville Airport, where awaiting medics transported her to Wilcox Hospital for medical treatment.

Kapa‘a transfer station scheduled for repairs and maintenance

Kapa‘a transfer station scheduled for repairs and maintenance

KAPA‘A – The Kapa‘a transfer station is scheduled for repair and maintenance work from Monday, Oct. 17 to Friday, Nov. 4.  

The scope of work includes: repairs to the hydraulic cylinder; replacement of various equipment parts; and improvements to the floor and wear surface.

While the work is underway, loose mixed waste will not be accepted at the facility. However, all other services will continue including: bagged trash; along with green waste, scrap metals, appliances, propane tanks, used tires and residential used motor oil and motor oil filters for recycling.

Residents wishing to dispose of loose mixed waste during the repairs can take their items to the Līhu'e transfer station. 

The hours of the transfer stations are 7:15 a.m. to 5:15 p.m.

Public input sought on areas that should be preserved and protected

Public input sought on areas that should be preserved and protected

LIHU‘E – The public is invited to share their ideas during community meetings on the six sites recommended for acquisition by the Public Access, Open Space and Natural Resources Preservation Fund Commission in its 2010 annual report to the county.

Commission members are eager to hear the public’s perspective on possible strategies for protection and/or acquisition of these sites that will assist the county with its Open Space Fund planning.

The meetings will be held as follows:

  • Tuesday, Oct. 11, 6 to 7:30 pm – Salt Pond Park, main pavilion

Recommendations to be discussed - restoration and expansion of shoreline access from Lāwa‘i Kai to Port Allen and the Salt Pond Beach Park expansion for the protection of the Hanapēpē salt pans, mauka and west and buffer area.

Kaua‘i Job Fair scheduled Oct. 13

LIHU‘E – Looking for a job or planning a career change? Employment information and opportunities will be offered at the Tenth annual Kaua‘i Job Fair sponsored by the county and WorkWise Kaua'i.

The event is scheduled on Thursday, Oct. 13 from 9:30 am to 12:30 pm at the Lihu'e Civic Center.

Jobseekers will have the opportunity to meet approximately 36 employers including many that are currently hiring.

Workshops on resume writing and interviewing tips will also be offered. The schedule of the workshops will be posted at the event.
