Grant awarded to clean up tsunami debris

LIHUE, Hawaii (AP) - A Kauai organization has been awarded a grant to help clean up debris from the Japanese tsunami.

According to The Garden Island, the state Department of Health says the Surfrider Foundation of Kauai received a $25,000 grant to help clean up Kauai's shorelines. Carl Berg, chairman of the foundation, says the money will be used to fund a pair of fellowships for students at Kauai Community College. 1 of the students will coordinate beach cleanups and net patrols. The other will monitor tsunami debris.

Berg says starting in February there has been a large spike in the amount of tsunami-related debris.

Suspect arrested in connection with Kapa‘a woman's death

Steven Michael Wilson

KAPAA, KAUAI (HawaiiNewsNow)- Police on Kauai have arrested a suspect in the death of 21-year-old Kapaa woman Kendra Lewis.

Lewis was found dead in her room Friday afternoon. An autopsy conducted today confirmed that she died as a result of stab wounds.

Steven Michael Wilson, age 26 of Kapaa, has been arrested and charged with second-degree murder and remains in police custody in lieu of $1 million bail.

Police believe Wilson, who was initially classified as a person of interest in the case, was living with the Lewis at the time of her death at the Kawaihau Sports Villa condominium. The two relocated here from Alaska at around the beginning of the year.

Police located Wilson Saturday afternoon and brought him in for questioning. He was subsequently arrested and charged for the crime.

Wilson's arraignment is scheduled for Tuesday.

HONOLULU (AP) - Trial has been delayed for a man accused of burglarizing "South Park" co-creator Trey Parker's home on the Hawaiian island of Kauai, after Parker didn't show up for a recent hearing.

Parker was subpoenaed to testify in the first-degree burglary case against former Kauai police officer Joseph Bonachita, who's accused of breaking into Parker's Wailua home in 2009. Bonachita is also accused of threatening Parker and a woman with a knife.

When Parker missed a hearing last week, a warrant was issued. But Kauai Prosecuting Attorney Justin Kollar said Friday that the warrant was never sent to police because Parker contacted the prosecutor's office and explained he had scheduling issues.

"He had been served with a subpoena," Kollar said. "He should have been in court."

The judge delayed the trial until June 3.

Hawaii leaders grapple with Kauai drownings spike

HONOLULU (AP) - In less than four months this year, Kauai is already close to tripling the four drowning deaths seen on the island in all of 2012.

Kauai Visitors Bureau executive director Sue Kanoho says 11 drownings this early in the year is a "huge concern."

The rate has become so problematic that Hawaii's state Senate is asking airlines to show a video on flights into Hawaii cautioning people about ocean safety. Sen. Michelle Kidani, who introduced the resolution, says if the videos save just one life "it's well worth it."

The proposal passed the state Senate this month but is no more than a non-binding statement. A companion resolution failed to pass the House earlier this week. It's not clear whether airlines would participate.

Kanoho says it will take a combination of initiatives to get visitors and residents to understand the precautions they should take before exploring the island's oceans and mountains.

LIHUE, KAUAI (HawaiiNewsNow)- High tech cameras placed at remote breeding sites are providing

federally funded project under the state Department of Land and Natural
Resources (DLNR) Division of Forestry and Wildlife, the 14 cameras were placed
on Newell's Shearwater and Hawaiian Petrel burrows during the breeding season
last year to collect data on everything from the arrival of adults to the
fledging of chicks.
