Cold front moving towards Kauai and Oahu

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow)- An approaching cold front will shut down the trades and turn winds light and southerly by Saturday. That will mean an increase in humidity and some volcanic haze.

The front will bring increasing showers to Kauai and Oahu Sunday, and then continue wetter than normal weather into the work week.

The weather will likely be wetter than average until mid-week, when the trade winds are expected to return and gradually dry us out.

Waves are subsiding out in the country. The next NW swell will be a small one and show up on Monday. A larger, moderate sized swell will come in from the NW next Thursday. East shores will be slightly elevated as long as the stronger trade winds blow. Not much expected for south facing shores.

Kauai crime spree suspects face lengthy sentences

LIHUE, KAUAI (HawaiiNewsNow)- Two
men each face possible sentences of more than a century for their roles in
numerous property crimes.

On
Thursday, April 18, Aron Nagao changed his plea from not guilty to no contest
to 15 felony charges in 12 separate cases. Nagao appeared in front of Chief
Judge Randal G.B. Valenciano.

Nagao
was charged in connection with a string of burglaries, car break-ins and thefts
that took place between August and September of 2012, from Hanama‘ulu to
Kapa‘a.

If
sentenced to the maximum period of incarceration, Nagao could be sentenced to
over 100 years in state prison. His sentencing is scheduled for August 8 at 8
a.m.

Kamron
Cortez, charged as a co-defendant in several of Nagao's cases, also faces a
lengthy prison sentence for his involvement in a number of property crimes. On
February 14, Cortez entered guilty or no contest pleas to 17 felonies.

Pflueger to stand trial for manslaughter

James Pflueger (standing, center)

LIHUE, KAUAI (HawaiiNewsNow)- Retired auto dealer James Pflueger will go to trial September 16 in connection with the Ka Loko dam breach resulted in the deaths of seven people.

Pflueger's appearance before Kauai Circuit Judge Randal Valenciano was initially set for a plea agreement, but the deal fell through. Neither his attorney nor the deputy attorney general prosecuting the case would comment on the plea agreement.

Pflueger faces seven counts of manslaughter. In March 2006, seven people were swept away to their deaths after the Ka Loko dam, which sits on Kauai property owned by Pflueger, burst following a period of extended heavy rainfall.

The 87-year-old is accused of knowingly closing a spillway that would have prevented the dam from collapsing.
