LIHUE, KAUAI (HawaiiNewsNow)- A brush fire that broke out in a vacant lot in Līhu'e caused a road closure and the evacuation of a major retailer this afternoon.

No injuries were reported in the roughly 10-acre fire, but officials report the flames came within 100 feet of Wal-Mart. As a safety precaution, police evacuated Wal-Mart and shut down Ahukini Road, between Kapule and Kūhi‘ō highways, while firefighters worked to gain control of the blaze.

The roadway was reopened at around 2:45 p.m. Wal-Mart was reopened for business at around 3 p.m.

Kauai sports complex would cost more than $45 million

LIHUE, Hawaii (AP) - A consultant says a proposed sports complex on Kauai would cost more than $45 million.

The Garden Island says on top of the initial cost, there would be annual maintenance fees of $380,000 for the proposed Waimea Sports Complex.

Project consultants presented their findings last week to the Kauai County Council. Plans for the sports center include facilities for baseball, softball, soccer, track and field, football and basketball.

The project received mixed reaction from council members. Some were concerned that a single project would cost nearly the same as the county's entire proposed budget for capital improvement projects in fiscal year 2014.

However, others saw it as an opportunity to promote health, tourism and business.
