LIHUE, KAUAI (HawaiiNewsNow)- Twelve stranded hikers were airlifted out of Hanakapi'ai this morning after being stranded in the valley overnight.

Rescue 3 personnel aboard Air 1 flew into the area at around 7:30 a.m. this morning after being notified of two missing hikers. Once on scene, rescuers located 12 hikers unable to cross the Hanakapi'ai Stream due to the high water level.

All 12 hikers were airlifted out of the valley without injury.

The island of Kaua'i remains under a flash flood warning until at least 11:15 a.m. with wet and rainy conditions expected to continue through tonight.

A flash flood warning means flash flooding is imminent or occurring in streams, roads and low-lying areas. Residents and visitors are instructed not to cross fast flowing or rising water on foot or in a vehicle.

Ocean officials also urge beachgoers to stay out of brown, murky water.

Flash Flood Warning extended for Kauai

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow)- The National Weather Service in Honolulu has extended a Flash Flood Warning for the island of Kauai until 2:45 a.m.

  • At 11:35 p.m., radar showed moderate to heavy rains continuing mostly over interior mountain areas of the island, including south of Hanalei and Kilauea and west of Kapaa and Wailua. A heavy shower was also seen along the coast at Wailua and Lihue.
  • Other locations in the warning include but are not limited to Moloaa, Princeville and Anahola.

Due to rising waters in the Hanalei River, Kuhio Highway in the vicinity of the Hanalei bridge has been closed. Motorists should avoid the area until the road has been reopened.

A water conservation notice has also been issued for Hanalei, as Department of Water crews work to identify the reason for low water pressure in the area.
