KAPA‘A – The Department of Water (DOW) has scheduled a water outage for Kapa‘a Homesteads on Tuesday, Nov. 15, from 7:30 am to 8 pm.

National Event Helps Hawaii Smokers Quit Smoking

Throughout November, community organizations throughout Hawaii will be hosting events to celebrate the American Cancer Society’s 36th annual Great American Smokeout, which takes place November 17, 2011. The Great American Smokeout is an annual nationwide event created by the American Cancer Society to encourage smokers to use November 17 as the day to quit smoking or to make a plan to quit smoking.

On Kauai, the American Cancer Society, Coalition for a Tobacco-Free Hawaii, Kauai Veterans Clinic, and Hoola Lahui are joining forces for the Great American Smokeout “Holo Holo.” This initiative is a mobile unit that will be deployed at several Garden Isle beach parks (formally Pine Tree Inn, Hanamaulu & Kapaa) from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. to distribute Quit kits and provide on-the-spot cessation advice to beachgoers. More than 400 fifth-grade students from schools around Kauai learned about water awareness and conservation as part of the Make A Splash, Project WET, sponsored by ARDA-Hawaii, the timeshare association, and hosted by the Kauai Department of Water.\

The hands-on educational event, which is part of ARDA-Hawaii’s community service commitment to the Garden Isle, took place recently at Pua Loke Park.

Kauai residents urged to conserve water

KAUAI (HawaiiNewsNow) - Kalaheo residents are asked to conserve water until further notice.

According to the county's Department of Water, an electrical problem at a well on Thursday caused pumps to stop replenishing the supply.

Anyone who lives and works in the area is urged to use water for essential purposes only.

Andy Irons remembered one year after death

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - It was one year ago on this day that legendary Kauai surfer Andy Irons died.

He was found dead in a Dallas hotel room.

According to a coroner, Irons suffered a heart attack and that his use of methadone and cocaine were contributing factors.

The three-time world champion will always be remembered for his fierce surfing and passion for life.

Koke'e fire destroys one cabin, damages another

KOKE'E, Kaua'i (HawaiiNewsNow) - A late night fire on Kaua'i destroyed a 900-square-foot cabin Monday while damaging a nearby cabin of the same size.

Officials say that both of the cabins were unoccupied at the time of the blaze, and that no one was injured in the fire. No other structures were threatened.

Police Dispatch received a call about the fire in Koke'e at approximately 9:43 pm, when the caller reported that the cabin was totally engulfed by flames. Shortly thereafter, Engine 7, Truck 7, Rescue 3, Truck 3, Prevention 1 and 3, and BC1 responded to the call.

Upon arrival, crews removed the corrugated roofing that had collapsed onto the fully engulfed cabin before proceeding to extinguish the remaining fire.

The fire in the second cabin was not nearly as severe, with damage being contained to the living room area. Authorities say the fire was deemed fully extinguished at 1:14 am.

Job applications now accepted for Winter Fun Program

Job applications now accepted for Winter Fun Program

LIHU‘E – County officials announced today that job applications are now being accepted for the Winter Fun Program.

High school students, age 16 and older, college students, as well as adults can apply for recreation aide positions. Site manager positions are open to college students and adults.

Employment in the Winter Fun Program will run for approximately two weeks, from Dec. 19 to Dec. 30

Applications can be filled out and submitted online or downloaded from the county’s website, www.kauai.gov.

Applications can also be picked up at the Department of Parks and Recreation office at the Līhu'e Civic Center, Mo‘ikeha Building, suite 105.

The deadline to apply is Friday, Dec. 2.

Those selected for employment will be required to pass a drug-screening test and successfully complete a fingerprinting and/or criminal history record check.
