This store makeover brings Kapaa Middle School’s Art Department, Kapaa High School’s Athletic Department, Kapahi Menehune Food Mart together with the Mayor’s Life’s Choices Kauai office to make an awareness towards underage drinking through an environmental change.

County, others honored by Historic Hawai'i Foundation

LĪHU‘E – The County of Kaua'i was among those recently honored by the Historic Hawai'i Foundation for exemplary achievement in the field of historic preservation.

A Preservation Honor Award for the restoration of the Historic County Building was presented to the county last week, along with other parties involved in the project including: Kaua'i Historical Society; Mason Architects, Inc.; Shioi Construction; Portech Engineering; Martin & Chock; Prepose Engineering Systems; Douglas Engineering Pacific, and AMEL Technologies, Inc.

The presentation was made at the 37th annual Preservation Honor Awards ceremony held in Honolulu last Friday at the Neal Blaisdell Center. Managing Director Gary Heu and Yvette Sahut, legislative assistant to the County Council, accepted the award on behalf of the county.

Ocean Safety Bureau celebrates National Beach Safety Week

LĪHU‘E – Mayor Bernard P. Carvalho, Jr. held a proclamation ceremony in honor of National Beach Safety Week yesterday at the Līhu'e Civic Center, Mo‘ikeha Building.   

The Kaua'i Fire Department’s Ocean Safety Bureau (OSB) participates in the annual event to help promote ocean safety awareness and incident prevention.

“Kaua'i has some of the most stunning beaches in the world,” stated Mayor Carvalho. “However, the ocean can be as dangerous as it is beautiful, and our lifeguards risk their lives every day to protect the public. We take this time to thank them for all that they do.”

Ocean safety officials were praised for using innovative measures to promote Kaua'i’s guarded beaches as safe destinations for residents and visitors.

Community meetings on new landfill, resource recovery park scheduled

Community meetings on new landfill, resource recovery park scheduled

The Department of Public Works has scheduled four community meetings to obtain input and identify issues regarding the Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) for a new municipal landfill and resource recovery park.  

The meetings will run from 6 to 8 p.m. and will be held as follows:

  • Tuesday, May 22 – King Kaumuali‘i Elementary School
  • Wednesday, May 23 – Kekaha Neighborhood Center
  • Tuesday, May 29 – Kīlauea Elementary School
  • Wednesday, May 30 – old Kōloa Courthouse located next to the Kōloa Neighborhood Center

During the meetings, the county’s consultant R.M. Towill Corporation will discuss the EIS process, summarize the tasks completed thus far, and provide an overview of its proposed action plan.

Following the consultant’s presentation, the public will have the opportunity to provide their perspective on the EIS relative to the landfill and resource recovery park.
