Mayor submits proposed budget for fiscal year 2012-2013

LĪHU‘E – Mayor Bernard Carvalho, Jr. this afternoon submitted to the County Council his proposed budget for fiscal year 2012–2013.

The mayor is seeking approval of a $172.3 million operating budget and a $61.5 million capital improvement program. His proposed operating budget represents a 4.5 percent increase over the current fiscal year, and is largely due to an increase in fixed costs.

“While I feel confident that the financial decisions we’ve made over the past two years have been sound and prudent, there are still significant challenges ahead,” said the mayor. “We look forward to productive dialogue between now and May 8, and to submitting a final proposal that will carry us through to financial stability and maintain the critical importance of service to our people, not only for next year, but for many years to come.”

To view the mayor’s proposed budget for FY2013 in its entirety and his accompanying message, please go to the county website, www.kauai.gov in the What’s New section.
