Online survey allows public to weigh in on budget priorities

The following information was provided by the County of Kauai:

The public will have an opportunity to let the Mayor know what the county’s budget priorities for next fiscal year should be via a user-friendly on-line survey.           

“We are already actively planning for our fiscal year 2014 (FY14) budget submittal, and the public’s input will help us greatly to determine the priority needs that need to be addressed,” stated Mayor Carvalho.           

The survey consists of six questions and can be completed in 15 minutes or less.             

The Mayor’s FY14 submittal is due to the Council on March 15, 2013, however department heads began developing their budget proposals in early August, and have also been in contact with councilmembers to help determine the are

County announces General Election Day closures

 

            LĪHU‘E – In observance of General Election Day, County of Kaua'i offices will be closed on Tuesday, Nov. 6 along with all refuse transfer stations, the Kekaha Landfill, the Kaua‘i Resource Center, and the Kapa‘a and Waimea swimming pools.

            All HI-5 bottle redemption centers that are normally open on Tuesdays will be open except for the one located at the Kaua'i Resource Center. Puhi Metals Recycling Center will also be open.

Residential refuse pick-up will continue as scheduled.

HONOLULU – Governor Neil Abercrombie has selected Kaua'i for his first “Governor’s Cabinet in Your Community” event, an opportunity for his administration to hear from the community. The public event will take place Wednesday, September 19, 2012, from 5 to 6:30 p.m. at Chiefess Kamakahelei Middle School in Lihue.

The Governor’s Cabinet in Your Community will feature members of the administration who will share updates on projects and issues that communities face. It is also an opportunity for the public to ask questions and share concerns.

“Much of the official business that goes on takes place in Honolulu, but I assure you that this administration is not O'ahu-centric,” said Governor Abercrombie.

Governor Neil Abercrombie today announced the release of more than $92.8 million for various Capital Improvement Projects (CIP) designed to maintain, upgrade and expand transportation infrastructure across Hawaii.

LIHUE - The court will decide who has the power to suspend the chief of police.

The Kauai County Police Commission filed a law suit against Kauai County Mayor Bernard Carvalho, Jr. to seek declaratory judgement. The suit asks the court to give the police commission authority to suspend or disipline the chief of police.

Mayor submits proposed budget for fiscal year 2012-2013

LĪHU‘E – Mayor Bernard Carvalho, Jr. this afternoon submitted to the County Council his proposed budget for fiscal year 2012–2013.

The mayor is seeking approval of a $172.3 million operating budget and a $61.5 million capital improvement program. His proposed operating budget represents a 4.5 percent increase over the current fiscal year, and is largely due to an increase in fixed costs.

“While I feel confident that the financial decisions we’ve made over the past two years have been sound and prudent, there are still significant challenges ahead,” said the mayor. “We look forward to productive dialogue between now and May 8, and to submitting a final proposal that will carry us through to financial stability and maintain the critical importance of service to our people, not only for next year, but for many years to come.”

Kawakami appointed to represent District 14

Kawakami appointed to represent District 14

Kauai Councilman Derek S. K. Kawakami has been appointed to represent House District 14 in the State House. He fills the seat left vacant by Hermina Morita, who was appointed as Public Utilities Commission chairwoman.

House District 14 includes Hanalei, Anahola, Kealia, Kapaa and Waipouli.

Kawakami will resign as chair of the Intergovernmental Relations Committee on the Kauai County Council, which he has served on since 2008. He will be scheduled for his swearing in ceremony to represent District 14 once his resignation from the County Council is complete.
