LIHU‘E --   The Department of Land and Natural Resources, Division of Forestry and Wildlife (DOFAW) announces the opening of feral pig archery hunting in Hunting Unit J Archery Area on the island of Kaua‘i. Hunting Unit J will be open during the month of June only on weekends and on King Kamehameha day – Tuesday, June 11, 2013. 

Access into Unit J will be limited this year due to the July 2012 Koke‘e fire declaration closure which is still in effect.  Hunters may access Unit J from Koke‘e Road – Hwy. 550, Trail 2 upper Papa‘alai ridge road and Trail 3 – upper Ha‘ele‘ele ridge road to the Pu‘u Lua Reservoir.

Cause of Hanapēpē sewage spill determined

The following information is provided by the County of Kauai:

HANAPĒPĒ – A leak from a force main was found to be the cause of yesterday’s sewage spill in Hanapēpē. The spill occurred along the shoulder of Kaumuali‘i Highway near the Hanapēpē fire and pump stations.

Repair work on the force main was completed yesterday afternoon, and by 6 p.m. the Hanapēpē pump station was brought back online.

An estimated 50 to 100 gallons of raw wastewater percolated out of the force main. The spill was reported at approximately 6:50 a.m.

Waimea swimming pool to close Friday for KPD training

The following information is provided by the Department of Parks & Recreation:

WAIMEA – The Waimea swimming pool will be closed to the public on Friday, Aug. 31 to allow the Kaua'i Police Department to conduct a training session.

The normal hours of operation at the Waimea pool are: Tuesday and Thursday, 7:30 a.m. to 2:45 p.m.; Wednesday, Friday and Saturday, 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.; and Sunday, 12 to 4:30 p.m.

The facility is closed on Mondays and holidays, and will be closed on Tuesday, Sept. 4 in observance of Labor Day.

Five County EV Charging Stations Available for Public Use

The following information is provided by Kauai County:

County officials today announced that five of the county's electric vehicle (EV) charging stations are now available for the public to use.

Two of the new charging stations can be found next to the Kauai Museum fronting Rice Street. One is situated next to the Piikoi Building by the old Big Save loading dock. Two other units are located next to the Historic County Building.

The charging stations are known as "Level 2" stations, which provide charging at 208/240 volts for vehicles that have a J-1772 port such as the Chevy Volt and Nissan Leaf.

In order to use the charging stations, the public will have to call a toll-free number, 888-833-2148, provide a credit card and indicate how many hours of charging the user wants to purchase. The cost is $2 an hour, which was set last month by Ordinance No.

Meeting Regarding Shared Use Path Set for August 9

The following information is provided by Kauai County:

The potential effects on historic properties in the area of the proposed "Waipouli Connection" of the county's shared use path will be discussed at a public meeting next week.

The meeting is scheduled on Thursday, August 9 at the Lihue Civic Center, Piikoi Building, conference rooms A and B, starting at 9 a.m.

The meeting is being held in accordance with section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act, and is also part of a supplemental environmental assessment.

The primary purpose of the current planning effort is to re-evaluate the makai alternative for the Waipouli segment, which would run mostly along the ocean in the county's existing beach reserve from the Uhelekawawa Canal to Papaloa Road.

Governor Releases $92.8 Million for Highways, Airports and Harbors

Governor Neil Abercrombie today announced the release of more than $92.8 million for various Capital Improvement Projects (CIP) designed to maintain, upgrade and expand transportation infrastructure across Hawaii.

"Our highways, airports and harbors are essential to island commerce and our way of life; everyone depends on the daily reliability and functionality of this core infrastructure," said Governor Abercrombie.

Green Waste temporarily not accepted at Hanalei Transfer Station

The following information is provided by Kauai County:

The Hanalei transfer station is temporarily not accepting green waste due to muddy conditions. As soon as conditions improve, the green waste collection service will resume.

Area residents wishing to dispose of green waste during the suspension of this service can take their green waste to the Kapaa transfer station.

The other recycling programs are continuing at the Hanalei transfer station including: appliances; scrap metals; propane tanks; used tires; household recycling in the Kauai Recycles drop bins; and residential used motor oil and motor oil filters.
