Safeway and Chevron announce joint gas rewards program

Safeway Inc. (NYSE:  SWY) and Chevron (NYSE:  CVX) announced today a joint Reward Points loyalty program in Hawaii. Customers who earn Gas Rewards by shopping with their Safeway Club Card at Safeway stores will now be able to use their Rewards for up to 20 cents off per gallon when filling up at participating Chevron locations in Hawaii. This loyalty program will help maximize value and savings for both Safeway and Chevron customers through the combination of quality, convenience and rewards.

HONOLULU – The First Insurance Company of Hawaii (FICOH) board of directors has elected Jeff Shonka senior vice president, chief operating officer (COO). Shonka joined FICOH in 2002 as its chief financial officer. With this promotion, Shonka has assumed responsibility for key operational areas of the company, including Claims, Personal and Commercial Lines, Legal, Surety & Fidelity, and First Risk Management Services (FiRMS), a subsidiary brokerage operation for non-standard risks.

“Jeff is an invaluable member of the executive team who during his 10 years with First Insurance has not only earned the respect and trust of our officers, but of his department, our company and other industry leaders in Hawaii,” said Allen Uyeda, president and CEO of First Insurance.

One lane of Kolo Road closed for repair work

The following information is provided by the County of Kauai:

KĪLAUEA – One lane of Kolo Road from the Pili Road junction to the eastern end of Kolo Road will be closed for a week starting tomorrow, between 8:30 a.m. and 4 p.m. The closure will allow the state Department of Transportation’s contractor, Goodfellow Bros., Inc., to make the necessary repairs to the roadway, which served as a temporary bypass after the heavy rains in March.

Motorists are advised to use caution while driving through the area, observe all construction signs and traffic control devices, and to allow extra traveling time to reach their destinations.

Partial closure of Pua Loke St., limited customer services for DOW on Sept. 27

The following information is provided by the County of Kauai:

LĪHU'E -- Department of Water (DOW) officials announced that a portion of Pua Loke Street between Haleko and Hala roads will be closed this Thursday, Sept. 27, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Only local traffic for businesses in the area will be allowed.

The road will be closed because the DOW will be hosting its Ninth annual Make a Splash Water Festival at the Pua Loke Arboretum for fifth grade students from around the island.  

During the festival, the DOW will have limited customer services available. Drop off water bill payments will be accepted throughout the day, but the water resources and planning division will not be processing water permits until after the event.

LĪHU'E – County officials announced today that major changes have been made to the traffic pattern by Chiefess Kamakahelei Middle School due to concerns about pedestrian safety.

Motorists are urged to exercise caution while driving through the area.

The most significant change is the conversion of the Nuhou Road and Kanēka Street junction to a three-way stop. Drivers heading in either direction on Nuhou Road must now come to a complete stop.

Kauai Police Department promotes Child Passenger Safety Week

LĪHU'E – In recognition of National Child Passenger Safety Week, Kaua'i police will be hosting a free car seat safety inspection on Friday, September 21 at Kapa‘a Middle School from 4:30 to 6 p.m.           

“Car crashes are the number one cause of death for children under 12 years of age in the United States,” said Lieutenant Jon Takamura of the Traffic Safety Unit. “No matter how safe of a driver you are, collisions can happen at any time, and properly restraining your child could mean the difference between life and death.”           

In order to be effective, car seats must be the right fit for both your child and vehicle, and they must be properly installed.

Road closures for Saturday’s Pop Warner parade

The following information is provided by the Kauai Police Department:

LĪHU'E  – The parade scheduled for this Saturday, September 1, will celebrate 50 years of Kaua'i’s Pop Warner Football League. The parade is set to begin at 8 a.m. at the Old Historic County Building and end at Vidinha Stadium.

To accommodate the event, streets along the parade route will close from 7:30 a.m.

Road closures will include: Eiwa Street, between Hardy and Rice streets; Rice Street, from Haleko Road to Ho‘olako Street; and Ho‘olako Street, from the south stadium entrance to Rice Street.

Officers will be manning the closures and will keep the roads closed until the parade is over.

Motorists should allow additional time to get to their destinations as traffic delays are expected.
