The following information is provided by the Kauai Fire Department:

The Kaua'i Fire Department held a brush fire mitigation meeting for large landowners, lessees and other stakeholders Friday morning at the Kaua'i Civil Defense Emergency Operations Center.

The meeting gave fire officials the opportunity to take inventory of outside resources available to the department in the event of a large fire, such as manpower, water trucks and other heavy equipment. In addition, the Fire Prevention Bureau reminded large landowners of their responsibility in maintaining firebreaks for open fields that are adjacent to structures.

Storm water pumped from Poipu beach parking lot

KAUAI (HawaiiNewsNow) - The Department of Parks and Recreation on Tuesday began pumping the storm water that accumulated in the Poipu Beach parking lot following last weekend's heavy rain.

The work is being done under the guidance of the state Department of Health, and is expected to be completed by the end of this week.

While the work is underway, the public is advised to stay clear of the pumping operations.

The state Department of Health yesterday issued a brown water advisory for the island Kauai due to the recent heavy rains urging the public to stay out of flood water and storm water run-off.

Sewage spill reported in 'Ele'ele

Sewage spill reported in 'Ele'ele

'ELE‘ELE – An overflowing manhole was reported at approximately 6:25 a.m. this morning at the intersection of Kaumuali‘i Highway and 'Ele'ele Road. The manhole is located on the mauka side of the highway across from 'Ele'ele Shopping Center.

By 7:15 a.m., the sewage spill had abated.

Wastewater officials said that the spill occurred because the volume of water in the sewer main exceeded its capacity due to the heavy rain that occurred over the last 24 hours.

The sewage spilled from the manhole, mixed with the storm water runoff, and has run along the side of the road and is draining into Hanapēpē Valley.

The actual volume of sewage spilled is unknown, but is presumed to be more than 1,000 gallons and less than 10,000 gallons.

Department of Health officials have been notified about the spill.

The county will follow the direction of the Health Department in the management of this sewage spill.
