Tourist finds smoke grenade on Kealia Beach

KEALIA – A tourist found a smoke grenade at the north end of Kealia Beach Saturday morning at approximately 11:32 a.m. and reported it to lifeguards at the Kealia tower.

One of the lifeguards roped off the area and contacted the Kaua'i Police Department.

When the officers arrived, they determined that the smoke grenade was likely spent due to the missing pin and a hole on the bottom of the canister.

An explosive specialist Jerry Booth from the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) also responded to the scene, and confirmed that the grenade had been spent and rendered harmless.

Booth removed the grenade and was granted custody of it for use as a training aid for TSA employees.
